At Chassis Cab, we believe in the power of potential—and in the importance of supporting local talent as they rise to meet their dreams. That’s why we’re incredibly proud to sponsor Lucy Turmel, a professional squash player from Ipswich whose journey from local courts to the global stage is a shining example of dedication, passion, and perseverance.
Lucy’s athletic journey began early. At just eight years old, she was training seriously in gymnastics—but by 11, she made a life-changing decision to focus on squash.
“Gymnastics was getting really intense—five nights a week at ten years old is a lot,” Lucy shares. “I was coming home from training in tears. Squash, on the other hand, was fun. I had a coach who believed in me, and I just enjoyed it more. At that age, you want to enjoy what you’re doing.”
Her love for squash was also rooted in family. With two older brothers playing at county level and parents who were fitness instructors, Lucy was surrounded by sport from the start. “I’d be in the crèche while my brothers played, and naturally I just wanted to join in.”
Growing up in Ipswich, Lucy always had a drive to achieve something meaningful. “I’ve always been competitive. Both my parents were professional athletes, so I think it’s just in me. I never wanted to do something easy—I was always going to end up doing something sport-related.”
That determination paid off. At just 17, Lucy won her first professional tournament in Barcelona—despite being unseeded and expected to lose in the first round. “I didn’t really know how everything worked—I just showed up excited to be there. I went with my auntie, and we’d booked to go home after a couple of days. But I ended up winning the whole thing. It was crazy!”
One of Lucy’s proudest moments came at the 2022 Commonwealth Games, where she represented Team England.
“It was easily one of the best weeks of my life,” she says. “Playing in front of the biggest crowd I’ve ever had, staying in the village, having breakfast next to people like Adam Peaty—it was amazing. I played the current Commonwealth Games gold medallist at the time and lost 3-1, but it was such a great match. I’d love to go back and relive that.”
Lucy’s vision for the future is full of energy and ambition. “In five years, I still see myself playing. But after squash, I’d love to open a coffee shop. I’m passionate about it—it fuels my training and I love drinking it. I saw Jill Scott open Boxx2Boxx after her football career, and I’d love to do something like that. A place where athletes and locals can come together.”
When asked what advice she’d give to someone picking up a squash racket for the first time, Lucy offers heartfelt encouragement.
“Try not to listen to people you don’t need to. Everyone has an opinion, but not all of them matter. I just listen to my coach, my family, my friends. There’s a saying—‘nothing that’s worth having comes easy.’ So keep going, and do it for yourself. Surround yourself with people who build you up.”
With the squash season running from August to June, Lucy is currently in her off-season. “June’s the only time we can go on holiday, so I took a break. Now July is all about training, improving my fitness, increasing in strength, and working on some new things.”
At Chassis Cab, we’re honoured to support Lucy Turmel as she continues to represent Ipswich and England with pride, passion, and purpose. Her story is a powerful reminder of what can be achieved when talent meets opportunity—and we’re proud to be part of her journey.
